I can’t imagine how scandalized those critics who were relieved to have something that was mild enough to not excite their kids would’ve been if they’d stopped for a second and realized what was actually going on. The very first rule of Scooby-Doo, the single premise that sits at the heart of their adventures, is that the world is full of grown-ups who lie to kids, and that it’s up to those kids to figure out what those lies are and call them on it, even if there are other adults who believe those lies with every fiber of their being. And the way that you win isn’t through supernatural powers, or even through fighting. The way that you win is by doing the most dangerous thing that any person being lied to by someone in power can do: You think.”

- Chris Sims, Scooby-Doo and Secular Humanism

Focus on the content

I recently wrote a new Tumblr theme for my Tumblr. It’s very different than anything I’ve had before. Large white text, vibrant colors, and huge posts. The most important thing, and inspiration for the theme was the huge posts. It even scales down to mobile flawlessly.

The posts, if you have Javascript enabled1, are you’re browser window’s height + 10% padding. Why?2 It means you can really only look at one post at a time. Appreciate it for what it is.

I’m really liking how it turned out.

And it degrades gracefully if you don’t. ↩

Plus, it was cool to code too. ↩

My editor wanted me to be objective, which I tried my best to do. It’s not easy to be objective with a seething hatred coursing through your veins and this piping through your ears, but I think I did a pretty good job. My editor did not.

Here’s the deal, I pointed out all te legitimate flaws of SOPA and PIPA as well as what they’re intended to do1, that’s being objective. My editor wanted me to be apathetic (though zhe said “objective,” zhe meant apathetic), which means, in zher2 eyes, pointing out no flaws and no benefits to either side. That is. not. being objective. Being objective is point out all the things right and wrong with something. If there happens to be twenty things right and one thing wrong, or vice-versa, pointing all of them out is being objective. Pointing zero out either way, or selectively choosing one thing right and wrong when there are twenty things right and wrong for both sides is not being objective. With such thinking and editing as this, you’re doing your readership a huge disservice.

Why would you effectively censor yourself on a bill about corporate purchased censorship?

So you can see the difference in an example, I’ll provide on for you. Here’s apathetic:

“Today Hitler continued his campaign and congresses eastern Germany. While many people oppose his war, others in favor of it say that the war will only make humanity stronger.”

Here’s objective:

“Hitler continued his campaign today and conquered eastern Germany. The total death toll in this latest crusade is 2,317 bringing the total death toll since the beginning of the war to 17,546. Most of the public disagrees with the campaign citing that it is gruesome murder of innocents and that genocide isn’t a good thing. Others who support the war say that the human race will be better for the cleansing.”

I pointed out the only good thing about the legislation in the same objective tone as I pointed out the flaws in; the only good thing was the intent of the legislation and even that is shaky depending on whom you ask. ↩

Singular, gender-neutral pronouns. ↩

All it takes is one word under the guise of night.
However, War with weapons of a nuclear scale will never take flight.

It’s cool and all but the bright background makes it almost unusable.

And, along came Solarized. It’s got a nice palette and all, but there isn’t a good port of that to Espresso.

So, I’m still using a mod to the Tutti theme I cooked up right after I got Espresso, I call it Dark Tutti

I think it’s the best theme out there for Espresso right now, so I’m sharing it. Enjoy.
